June 21, 2022 ALS Revalida - Balabac. ALS-EST Balabac is the most challenging among the learning centers of Arnold Janssen. Located in the farthest end in the south of Palawan, a visitor takes 5 hours drive from Puerto Princesa to Rio Tuba and another 5 hours by boat to the island of Balabac the next day.
It needs two days (one way) just to pay a visit to the centers. The ALS-EST Balabac is a joint program of the Immaculate Conception Parish (an SVD-run parish) to address the literacy concerns of the indigenous Molbogs.
Converted to Islam, the Molbogs thrives around the shores of the island and sustained by subsistent fishing and farming. For lack of modern fishing equipment, resorting to illegal fishing is oftentimes a temptation that they could not resist. Hence, the ALS-EST program provides skills training on food production and a livelihood program to persuade them to protect the environment.
This year, seminars on environmental protection and coastal rehabilitation will b e integrated into the program.
